Club Night is our members entertaining each other\, with quality (lightly) rehearsed acts of all kinds in a fun atmosphere. A typical Club Night (there is no typical Club Night!) might include teenagers doing Monty Python\, professional opera singers\, an extract from a play\, a poem\, tasters from our current musical\, Irish jig\, teen guitarist\, tap dancers\, wartime songs\, comic monologues\, stand-up\, and Torbay Theatre Choir. SUMMARY:H.M.S. Pinafore; The Lass That Loved a Sailor
DESCRIPTION:H.M.S. Pinafore; or\, The Lass That Loved a Sailor is a comic opera in two acts\, with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It opened at the Opera Comique in London on 25 May 1878\, and ran for 571 performances\, which was the second-longest run of any musical theatre piece up to that time. H.M.S. Pinafore was Gilbert and Sullivan’s fourth operatic collaboration and their first international sensation. \n\n\n\nThe story takes place aboard the Royal Navy ship HMS Pinafore. The captain’s daughter\, Josephine\, is in love with a lower-class sailor\, Ralph Rackstraw\, although her father intends her to marry Sir Joseph Porter\, the First Lord of the Admiralty. She abides by her father’s wishes at first\, but Sir Joseph’s advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to overturn conventional social order. They declare their love for each other and eventually plan to elope. The Captain discovers this plan\, but\, as in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas\, a surprise disclosure changes things dramatically near the end of the story.

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: H.M.S Pinafore
DESCRIPTION:Ahoy there! Auditions for HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan are taking place on Sunday\, 8 June at the Torbay Community Hall\, 35 Watea Road. This classic comic opera is directed by the fabulous Peter Segrove and his experienced creative team. \n\n\n\nHMS Pinafore is not quite a full-length operetta. There were casting issues in 1878: the comedienne who was cast to play Cousin Hebe pulled out and the young singer replacing her would not have been able to cope with the comic dialogue or the full solo songs. Accordingly\, most of the role of Cousin Hebe was cut and this shortened the show considerably. It is Director Peter Segrove’s aim to extend this production of HMS Pinafore and make up for lost time! We have the original dialogue which was cut and are also looking to insert a song or two to flesh out the role of Cousin Hebe. \n\n\n\nThe story is a typical Gilbert and Sullivan imbroglio\, and is easily told in a single (long!) sentence. Sir Joseph Porter\, the First Lord of the Admiralty\, is arriving on the HMS Pinafore\, along with a chorus of his sisters\, cousins and aunts\, to claim the hand of the Captain’s daughter\, Josephine\, who is unfortunately in love with a common sailor\, Ralph Rackstraw\, but is unable to tell Ralph because\, although she loves him\, she fears that life as the wife of a sailor would be very hard compared with that of the wife of a Lord and\, in addition\, she does not want to disappoint her father Captain Corcoran\, who is determined that the match should happen\, although he is warned by Little Buttercup\, a nautical gypsy-like peddler\, who is herself in love with the Captain\, that strange things are about to happen! \n\n\n\nChorus auditions begin at 2pm\, followed by principal auditions at 3pm.  \n\n\n\nThe show will run from 25 September to 5 October and promises nautical charm\, witty satire\, and unforgettable tunes.  \n\n\n\nContact Peter for more information. SUMMARY:Platinum Jubilee Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:1952 was a busy year.  As the young Queen Elizabeth II was being crowned in London\, twelve thousand miles away in Torbay\, New Zealand\, a keen group of thespians and dramaphiles were getting together to form the Torbay Dramatic Society (aka Torbay Theatre).  Now\, sadly\, our Gracious Queen is no more\, but Torbay Theatre goes on from strength to strength. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 29 October\, our Torbay Theatre whānau will be celebrating 70 years of community theatre in Torbay with a special event to be held in the Torbay Community Hall.  Our teams are working right now to put together an evening’s entertainment comprising samples of some of the plays\, musicals\, and variety shows that have been presented in each of the last seven decades. \n\n\n\nThis will be an entertaining evening for all\, with audience seated at tables\, and plenty of opportunity to mingle between acts. We hope to attract many members from days gone by\, as well as our usual mix of roughly age 8-88 currently involved\, so reminiscence will be a-plenty!  \n\n\n\nThis is a one-off event and spaces will be limited\, so be sure to reserve yours. Supper will be served\, and drinks are BYO. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease indicate in the notes if one of your party will be in a wheelchair or has any other mobility issues.
