About the Show

On Air is a festive 1940s comedy and variety Christmas radio show. We are bringing the golden age of radio back to life through a delightful mix of music and comedy. Audiences will enjoy a nostalgic journey through time, gaining a charming glimpse into the lives and humorous interactions of the station’s employees as they broadcast live.

Who We Are Looking For

Singers, Crooners & Character Voice Actors

We’re seeking strong vocal performers who can deliver classic 1940s radio-style comedy, timing, and musicality. We’re looking for back-up singers and crooners who can deliver the rich, characterful 1940s vocal style, and confidently shift into comedic or character voices for ensemble scenes. 

We welcome performers of all ages! While we don’t focus on physical appearance, we are looking for that authentic 1940s sound. Cast members will perform in trios, quintets, and full-choir numbers, while also bringing a variety of lively radio characters to life throughout the production.

• George & Gracie: Our wonderfully chaotic lead couple.
• Announcer — the voice of the station
• Bill & Susan — neighbours and co-workers
• Mailman — with an infamously evil wife
• “Gee whiz, Mister!” — the boy from across the street
• Shopkeepers & Neighbours — colourful community voices
• Live Sound Effects Performer – A dedicated on-stage Foley artist creating sound effects throughout the entire show.

Special Guest Appearances

• Hollywood Crooners (male & female) Think Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong — show us what ya got.
• British Celebrities of the Era Think David Niven, Vivien Leigh — crisp, elegant, unmistakably 1940s.

Rehearsals

The final rehearsal schedule is being finalised, however, rehearsals will take place on Monday nights, Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons at Torbay Gate Theatre
